Iceland

This editorial map layout is a great example of how a map, photograph, illustration and type can be combined in a harmonious way to reflect the mood or vibe of a place, and transport the viewer. I’ve never been to Iceland (yet!) but a piece like this makes me feel closer to it in a way.

Kötlujökull is a massive, visually striking tongue of an outlet glacier originating from the eastern side of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap in South Iceland. Its defining feature is that it directly covers the Katla caldera—one of Iceland’s most active and notoriously dangerous subglacial volcanoes.

The majestic gyrfalcon is the world’s largest falcon species, and happens to be the national bird of Iceland.
