The dashing Humboldt Penguin is one of 4 species of so-called “banded” penguins (the other three being the Galapagos, African and Magellanic Penguins). They are best known for their characteristic black-and-white banding and preference for warmer climates, versus the snowy and icy habitats of other species.
This sign (bottom) is currently installed at my local zoo. This sign is OK, but with the deep blue background and gigantic all-caps title, it feels a bit overwhelming, like it’s shouting. The photo of the bird is cutoff at the belly, I’d prefer to see the animal as a whole. And that tiny globe map does not show off the animal’s home in South America. A map should communicate something, and be easily understood! So in this concept, I made the map a dominant feature, and by placing it opposite the penguin photo it serves as a nice counterbalance, and hopefully gives the reader a better perspective of the penguin’s home environment.
