Wildland Firefighting

I was asked by Boy’s Life magazine (the monthly magazine of the Boy Scouts of America, founded in 1911) to create this full-spread illustration depicting the complex organization of a wildland fire Incident Command System (ICS). This art will be overlaid with text captions describing each of the ICS components. Researching this was extraordinarily interesting and inspiring to me. I highly recommend the movie Only the Brave and the book it was based on, Granite Mountain by Brendan McDonough — both are about the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire tragedy in Arizona that killed 19 wildland firefighters, this country’s greatest loss of firefighters since 9/11. Another great book to read is Smokejumpers by Jason A. Ramos. These brave men and women are unsung heroes and deserve greater awareness and support.
