Shipwreck Coast

There is a stretch of coastline along Michigan’s Upper Peninsula that is often referred to as the Shipwreck Coast or the Graveyard of the Great Lakes. Some 300 ships have met their fate along this stretch of Lake Superior’s shoreline roughly between Whitefish Bay’s Point Iroquois to Grand Marais. The most famous of these is the S.S Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in a wicked November ’75 storm just 17 miles off the shore of Whitefish Point.

This map was featured in a story on the Shipwreck Coast published in Country magazine [August/September 2017].
