Candlewick Press of Massachusetts contacted me to create five custom illustrated maps for an upcoming book tentatively titled The Long Journey, due out in May 2020. Each map depicts a different region of the world: Afghanistan, Sudan, Burundi, Northern Iraq and Myanmar. A map will be featured on each chapter’s opening spread, and each chapter contains first-person testimony about what it is like to flee war, face violence, grow up in a refugee camp, be sold into slavery and eventually resettle in America. It’s sure to be a powerfully emotional book and I’m honored to be a part of it.
