Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 rugged mountainous islands located in the North Atlantic, roughly halfway between Iceland and the tip of Scotland. Interesting fact: there are more sheep living there than people, roughly 75,000: 55,000! The islands boast a great diversity of avian life, most notably Atlantic Puffins, Eurasian Oystercatchers (national bird), Northern Fulmars, European Storm Petrels…and the gorgeous Northern Gannet (the largest species nesting on the islands). The illustration (drawn by me) symbolizes the abundance of life present on the islands, despite their seemingly barren appearance.

I used the map of the islands as on overlay on the striking photo by Jan Erik Waider (www.northlandscapes.com), as a way to integrate both visuals to enhance a sense of place. Adding text and an illustration gives the layout an editorial feel, like a page out of a travel magazine. In the second image, I show how a Golden Spiral connects the key features — map, illustration, description and title. The result is a balance and subtle flow on the page, moving the eye around in a quiet way.
