The jaguar once dominated much of the Western Hemisphere, ranging from southern Argentina all the way north to Colorado. Today, despite being perhaps the most adaptable, resilient and resourceful big cat in the world, it has access to less than half of that historic range. This map attempts to show how much of its former range has been lost, and how much is currently fragmented.
This map was inspired by the book, “Heart of the Jaguar: The Extraordinary Conservation Effort to Save the Americas’ Legendary Cat,” by renowned author James Campbell. It tells the story of the staggering undertaking to save the jaguar, as well as the impassioned conservationist who dedicated his life to the species. Learn more here.
